Water-based photoluminescent paints: LuminoKrom® bets on an ecological, high-performance alternative

How do you combine innovation, safety and respect for the environment in indoor luminescent marking projects? This is the question LuminoKrom® has answered by developing its range of water-based photoluminescent paints.

Designed as an eco-responsible alternative to solvent-based versions, our acrylic solutions enhance visibility in the dark, while limiting emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

This article explains the advantages, uses and technical features of this range, designed for demanding indoor environments.

LuminoKrom® develops its ecological alternative for interior projects

Innovation driven by health and the environment

For several years now, our R&D team has been committed to a more responsible formulation approach. While solvent-based photoluminescent paints are still the benchmark for outdoor applications, they may not be suitable for sensitive indoor environments such as schools, hospitals, public buildings or industrial environments.

In response to this problem, we have developed an aqueous formulation, i.e. a paint whose main solvent is water, with no aggressive volatile organic compounds. This choice reduces the risk of inhalation, facilitates application in enclosed spaces and contributes to better indoor air quality.

At LuminoKrom®, we believe it's possible to combine performance, safety and environmental responsibility. With this in mind, over the last few years we have considerably expanded our catalog of water-based photoluminescent paints, designed to meet the demands of indoor environments.

Photoluminescent paint combines safety and ecology

Our LuminoKrom® water-based paints offer high photoluminescent power, capable of guiding movement in the dark without the need for a power source. Our products recharge in natural or artificial daylight, and return this light for several hours at night. Each reference has its own characteristics, its own luminescence class, and its own documentation and technical data sheet.

Safety remains at the heart of our mission. Thanks to our expertise in photoluminescent pigments, our LuminoKrom® waterborne paint retains a high level of luminescence, equal to that of our solvent-based alternative.

Once activated by natural or artificial light, the paint or coating continues to emit light in the dark, without energy input, for over 10 hours (class G marking). This performance can be used to mark corridors, staircases, emergency exits, doors and obstacles, providing essential passive safety signage in the event of power cuts or poor visibility.

The benefits of waterborne luminescent paint

Ideally suited to indoor applications, they are particularly useful for :

  • Securing escape routes or corridors without lighting
  • Designing and securing rooms without natural light
  • Mark out staircases or high-risk areas
  • Guiding the public in the event of a power cut

What is water-based paint?

A water-based paint is a paint whose main solvent is water. Unlike solvent-based paints, which contain more volatile chemical solvents, acrylic versions are less polluting, easier to clean and safer to apply. The absence of chemical solvents in its list of components makes waterborne paints more respectful of the environment and human health.

Compared to solvent-based paints, which use organic solvents that are often toxic or flammable, water-based alternatives are distinguished by :

  • little or no odor
  • greater compatibility with sensitive environments (special wall or floor coatings)
  • easier cleaning of tools with water
  • faster drying
  • very low or zero VOC content

Water-based paints, commonly known as acrylics, have long been reserved for simple decorative uses. Today, thanks to technical innovation, they achieve performance levels comparable to those of solvent-based paints, even in demanding areas such as photoluminescence.

Why choose water-based photoluminescent paint?

A healthy, responsible alternative to solvent-based markings

For a long time, photoluminescent markers were mainly formulated using solvents, limiting their use in enclosed and sensitive environments. At LuminoKrom® , we have invested over the last few years in the research and development of high-performance aqueous formulas, eliminating VOC emissions while guaranteeing excellent durability for floor markings.

The result: healthier products with healthier components for both applicators and users, particularly in schools, hospitals, public and private buildings and underground parking lots. Opting for a waterborne paint means choosing a product that is safer to use, particularly suited to enclosed areas or those frequented by sensitive populations: children, the elderly, patients, the general public...

It limits the emission of harmful substances, and its low environmental impact meets the most stringent standards for indoor air quality (A+ label, HQE certification, etc.). It's a responsible commitment for end-users, applicators and contractors alike.

Powerful photoluminescence, even in aqueous versions

The transition to solvent-free paint has in no way compromised technical performance: our LuminoKrom® waterborne paints retain their high photoluminescent power at night, thanks to an exclusive formulation based on our expertise in intelligent pigments.

Thanks to our unique know-how, we have succeeded in maintaining unrivalled levels of luminescence in our markings, even in the aqueous phase, in line with standard requirements for night-time visibility. Our various products (paint, cold coating, spray cans, etc.) demonstrate luminescence durations ranging from class E to class G.

The paint is charged by daylight (natural or artificial) and releases it at night. It's an ideal solution for enhancing interior security without the need for energy or electricity. Staircases, corridors, emergency doors, evacuation routes: the possibilities are numerous for reinforcing interior safety in public buildings, warehouses or technical premises.

A growing range for all your interior projects

Today, our range of luminescent paints continues to expand to meet every need: different daylight colors, luminescence durations, formats (pots, aerosols, etc.), appearance or finish, compatibility with the coating (floor, wall) or material to be painted (wood, concrete, asphalt)...

We help our customers to personalize their projects, with a common objective: to combine innovation, sustainability and aesthetics in living and transit areas. The future lies in responsible photoluminescence, and it starts here.

Examples of possible applications:

  • Interior walls
  • Baseboards, doors, frames
  • Covered street furniture
  • Wall signage

All you need to know about our photoluminescent water-based paint

Why choose waterborne paint?
To reduce environmental impact, protect the health of applicators and guarantee healthy indoor air, while benefiting from high technical performance. It emits very few volatile compounds, is more respectful of health and the environment, and is perfectly suited to indoor use.

Is photoluminescent performance the same as with solvents?
Yes, we have developed a specific formulation to guarantee professional-quality luminescence in our water-based versions, in line with our LuminoKrom® standards. Our water-based markers benefit from the same photoluminescent technology as our solvent-based versions. They offer long-lasting, certified, high-performance luminescence.

Are these markings easy to apply?
Absolutely. They can be applied just like conventional paint, using standard tools (roller, brush or spray gun), and are easy to clean up with water. Our LuminoKrom® products are ready-to-use and require no dilution before painting. They dry quickly after application and are odorless.

Can they be used outdoors?

Our water-based versions are recommended for projects in indoor or covered environments. For unprotected outdoor use, exposed to humidity or UV, we recommend our more weather-resistant solvent-based versions. However, depending on your local regulations and if you wish to opt for a more eco-responsible type of marking, you can also opt for our water-based paint. If this is the case, we recommend that you contact one of our LuminoKrom® experts to discuss your project and expectations.

At LuminoKrom® , innovation is always guided by responsibility. To meet environmental challenges and growing health and safety expectations, we have expanded our catalog of waterborne photoluminescent paints. These solvent-free solutions, designed for use in indoor environments, combine technical performance with respect for the environment.

With this water-based photoluminescent range, LuminoKrom® offers a durable, innovative and safe solution for all your signage and interior design projects. You benefit from a high-performance, eco-friendly product that's easy to install and designed for the most demanding environments.

This alternative to our solvent-based technologies limits exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOCs), while retaining powerful photoluminescence for enhanced visibility in the dark. A real advance in safety without compromising on indoor air quality.

Every day, we pursue our commitment to cleaner technology, in the service of visibility and safety in living, working and public spaces.
